Minimally Invasive Joint Surgery
Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows your orthopaedic surgeon to view the inside of the hip, knee, or shoulder joint. Doctors may perform this type of procedure when imaging studies indicate a problem in the joint. The procedure allows doctors to treat, as well as diagnose, various types of joint problems. New arthroscopy techniques and equipment enable surgeons to address many problems that were not manageable just a few years ago.
During arthroscopy, a very small camera is used to see inside the joint. The camera will display the images on a monitor as the doctor maneuvers the device. Additional equipment is often used to treat observed damage (for example, labrum repair or shaving of bone).
When Is Arthroscopy Necessary?
Typically, doctors will use other diagnostic methods to evaluate joint problems before attempting this procedure. Often, this includes a combination of examinations in the office, as well as x-rays and MRI exams. Arthroscopy is considered safe and has been used for many years. The procedure may be used to diagnose and treat conditions such as:
- Femoroacetabular impingement: bone spurs that occur around the hip joint
- Loose bodies: fragments of bones that are moving around in the joint
- Joint infections
- Hip snapping syndromes: tendons that rub across the joint
- Labral tears
- Muscle tears
- Chronic bursitis
