Reproductive Genetics

Reproductive Genetics

With our Reproductive Genetics Service, we offer comprehensive consultations including individual evaluation, genetic counseling, and testing before, during, and after pregnancy. Our services include preconception counseling, prenatal counseling and hereditary cancer counseling.

The expert team at Westchester Medical Center consists of a highly experienced obstetrician-geneticist and genetic counselor who will work closely with you and your obstetrician-gynecologist, as well as neonatologists, reproductive endocrinologists, and other specialists as needed to manage your healthcare.

Find a Genetic Counselor

Genetic counselors are healthcare professionals with specialized education, training, and certification in genetics who provide evaluation, risk-assessment, and information, as well as guidance and support as you make informed decisions about genetic testing.

A genetics consultation with our team includes meeting with both a genetic counselor and obstetrician-geneticist. We gather a detailed family and medical history, assess your individual and familial risk for genetic conditions, and discuss your options for genetic testing based on your individualized evaluation.

Is a Genetic Counselor Right for Me?

You may consider a preconception or prenatal genetics consultation if you:

  • Are concerned about the risk for birth defects, genetic conditions, and/or developmental delay based on your family history
  • Are interested in routine carrier screening for common inherited genetic conditions (such as cystic fibrosis, Tay Sachs, Fragile X, spinal muscular atrophy, etc.)
  • Have had two or more miscarriages
  • Already have a child with a genetic condition or birth defect

You may consider a hereditary cancer genetics consultation if you:

  • Had a cancer diagnosed under age 50
