Ultrasound

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe non-invasive exam that does not use radiation.  These exams are performed on most parts of the body for various purposes. Advanced Imaging at Westchester Medical Center utilizes a state of the art fleet of Philips Epiq 7 and Epic Elite machines, capable of producing high quality diagnostic images. Our experienced technologists and radiologists have multifaceted expertise in advanced imaging, including liver elastography, and ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal and breast procedures.

American College of Radiology Ultrasound Accredited Facility badge

Accredited by the American College of Radiology

This accreditation is the gold seal that patients can rely on as an indicator of the highest level of image quality and patient safety. The accreditation is only awarded to facilities meeting practice parameters and technical standards following a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Professionals assess image quality, personnel qualifications, equipment adequacy, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs in order to grant accreditation.

Is Ultrasound imaging safe?

Standard diagnostic ultrasound is safe with no known hazardous effect on the human body. Ultrasound uses low-power sound waves to produce images of the body’s organs and soft tissues without ionizing radiation.

How should I prepare for my ultrasound test?

You will receive specific instructions at the time of scheduling depending on the type of ultrasound you are undergoing.

You should wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing.  A gown will be provided if necessary.

What should I expect during the exam?

Scanning: A sonographer, trained health care professional with dedicated expertise in ultrasound, will apply a water based gel to the area of interest and pass a transducer probe over the skin surface. Images will be produced and displayed on the screen.  You may be asked to change positions, breath hold or use the restroom depending on your exam. Most exams take approximately 30 minutes.

Certain exams require placement of a designated sterile transducer probe into the vagina. This is call transvaginal Pelvic ultrasound. The technologist will explain this part of the exam and ask your permission beforehand.

What should I do after the exam?

Instructions: There are no special precautions or restrictions after having an ultrasound, you may return to normal activities.

Results: All results will be sent to your physician, who in turn can discuss their relevance and importance.
