For most pregnant women, regular prenatal checkups with their general OB/GYN during pregnancy and through delivery are all the medical care they need.
For a woman who has an underlying medical condition or who develops a pregnancy complication affecting her body or baby, however, expert subspecialist treatment by a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist, or perinatologist, may be beneficial. The specialists at Westchester Medical Center are versed in the range of issues pregnant women may face and are here to assist, each step of the way.
Comprehensive Care for Both Mother and Child
At Westchester Medical Center, four maternal-fetal medicine specialists provide advanced-level care for:
- Expectant mothers with prior medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease
- Those who have health problems resulting from pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes or preeclampsia
- Healthy mothers carrying multiple fetuses or those who have experienced prior preterm labor or delivery, recurrent miscarriages or premature rupture of the membranes
Maternal-fetal specialists also coordinate any specialized neonatal services a baby may require prior to or shortly after birth, such as heart surgery.
Results-Oriented Approach
A perinatologist may perform diagnostic sonograms, chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis to diagnose possible genetic or anatomic abnormality while a baby is still in utero. In such cases, our specialists can oversee care of a pregnant woman through her delivery or, in some cases, help her decide whether to continue the pregnancy.
