Westchester Heart and Vascular uses state-of-the-art CT (computed tomography) technology to directly image coronary arteries and identify arterial blockages that would otherwise only be diagnosed using invasive testing. Cardiac CT is a safe, painless test that is performed in both the outpatient and inpatient setting.
Cardiac CT scans use x-rays and computer software to create a series of images of the coronary arteries, heart chambers, valves and aorta. Cardiac CT scans can also be used to identify the presence of calcium and calculate a calcium score. The presence of calcium in the wall of the arteries, and the extent of calcium deposition are indicative of future cardiovascular risk. This information can be used to help decide on which medications are most beneficial in certain patients. Cardiac CT can also be used to identify cardiac tumors, such as atrial myxomas, identify congenital heart lesions such as anomalous coronary arteries and evaluate the pericardium.
At Westchester Heart and Vascular, we also perform cardiac CT on patients prior to undergoing atrial fibrillation ablation. This imaging modality provides vital information about the anatomy of the left atrium and the pulmonary veins which is instrumental for planning atrial fibrillation ablation procedures.
