Message from Program Director

Welcome to the Radiology Residency at Westchester Medical Center. For those of you who are unfamiliar with our program, I encourage you to explore our site which contains information on the program and will give you some insight into resident life here at WMC.

As Program Director, I am completely focused on creating a supportive environment that optimizes resident education and enhances patient care. The program at WMC offers a close-knit group of residents and attendings, with an abundant sense of teamwork and camaraderie within the department. We are fortunate to have an extremely collegial working environment with a faculty:resident ratio of 1:1, something that allows for personalized attention, close supervision and focused teaching. Our residents are an integral part of workflow and patient care on the diagnostic and interventional radiology services, with the residents fully immersed and engaged on all rotations.

Our faculty is fully board certified and subspecialty trained, and provide continuous education both at the workstation and during our noon conferences. Daily conferences are a mixture of case-based and didactic lectures designed to prepare the residents for clinical practice and the American Board of Radiology examination series, of which we have maintained a 100% five-year pass rate. Additionally, there are nearly 20 interdisciplinary conferences weekly that residents attend and present at, providing a comprehensive educational experience that reaches beyond the radiology department to provide further clinical perspective. We also provide a robust Grand Rounds Series, where leading radiologists in all subspecialties share their expertise through didactic and case conferences.

All rotations take place at Westchester Medical Center, which includes the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital and our outpatient facility. All of our residents match and enter into the top fellowship programs in the country, and graduate the program with the knowledge, confidence and ability to succeed in the ‘real-world’ of clinical practice.

While there is certainly a ‘not too big, not too small’ feel to the department, the diversity of cases that residents get to experience at Westchester Medical Center is unmatched anywhere, and the hospital is geographically situated close to all of the resources of Manhattan while maintaining the conveniences of a suburban hospital.

Additionally, research opportunities are abundant within the department, with a great many resident presentations at all of the major national meetings.

For applicants to the program I commend you on making the wisest decision in medicine, to enter the field of radiology. I wish you the best of luck in your future career as a radiologist. Feel free to contact me directly at Anna.Rozenshtein@WMCHealth.org.

Anna Rozenshtein, MD, FACR

Program Overview and Curriculum

Program Overview

Our Diagnostic Radiology residency is a four-year fully ACGME-accredited program with five residents per year for a total of 20 residents. Westchester Medical Center is the major teaching hospital for New York Medical College and is located adjacent to the New York Medical College Campus in Valhalla, New York, approximately 20 miles north of New York City. Westchester Medical Center is a tertiary care facility featuring a Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center, comprehensive stroke center, and robust transplant program. Residents complete the entirety of their clinical training on campus, with inpatient rotations at University Hospital and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital, and outpatient rotations at the Ambulatory Care Pavilion and Advanced Imaging Center. Additionally, remote coverage for MidHudson Regional Hospital provides residents with community hospital experience.

The mission of our diagnostic radiology residency is to offer a diverse and rich clinical experience combined with a comprehensive didactic curriculum in an enthusiastic learning environment, thereby preparing our trainees to become experts in diagnostic imaging, compassionate healthcare providers, and leaders within the field of radiology. As displayed in the alumni section, our graduates move on to exceptional fellowships at the nation's top programs and later join competitive academic and private practices all across the country. We encourage you to explore our website and learn more about our residency program. If you have any further questions or comments, please feel free to contact us.

Curriculum

Our curriculum is composed of 36 months of core subspecialty rotations during the first three years prior to the CORE examination, which is administered by the ABR at the end of the third year of radiology training. The core subspecialties through which the residents rotate during their first three years are: pediatric radiology, body CT, body MRI, musculoskeletal, chest, neuroradiology, mammography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, PET, fluoroscopy, and interventional radiology.  The fourth year is composed primarily of elective time, giving residents substantial flexibility to shape their schedule to fit their career goals. We are certified for two Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) positions per class, allowing residents interested IR to gain extensive experience before graduation and match into advanced placement IR fellowship positions, reducing training time by one year. Our department does not employ fellows, allowing residents to benefit from consistent one-on-one interaction with subspecialty-trained attendings.
