Overview

Neurovascular surgery involves the surgical management of diseases of the blood vessels of the brain. Many neurovascular surgeries are done via minimally invasive techniques. Providers at the Brain and Spine Institute at Westchester Medical Center use these procedures to treat a broad assortment of neurovascular disorders.

Treatment of Neurovascular Disease

Some of our most commonly treated conditions include the following.

Neurovascular Diseases

Acute Stroke

Acute stroke involves sudden neurological deficit ranging from weakness to numbness to speech impairment. In recent years, high-tech minimally invasive neurovascular surgery has emerged as a treatment for acute stroke. Our surgeons can deliver a catheter-based system through the arteries of the brain to remove a blood clot and reduce or eliminate symptoms. Westchester Medical Center provides 24/7 acute stroke care for patients seen in our own emergency department or transferred from other hospitals throughout the Hudson Valley. We also now provide acute stroke care at MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie and at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. Acute stroke is considered an emergency. In the event of stroke symptoms, call 911 immediately. Do not attempt to drive to the hospital.

Aneurysm

A brain aneurysm is a blister on an artery in the brain. Brain aneurysms can rupture and cause serious disability or death. Our team has expertise in minimally invasive treatments to cure brain aneurysms in our patient population. For more information on how to refer a patient for evaluation of a brain aneurysm, please call 914.493.2363.

AVM (Arteriovenous Malformation)

Arteriovenous malformation is an abnormal tangle of blood vessels in the brain. This tangle can bleed and cause neurological deficits, ranging from seizure to weakness or numbness. Our Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery team has expertise in minimally invasive treatment for complex AVMs in our patient population. For more information on how to refer a patient for evaluation of a brain AVM, please call 914.493.2363.

AVF (Arteriovenous Fistula)

Arteriovenous fistula is an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein in or around the brain. This abnormal connection can leak or bleed, resulting in neurological impairment. Our team has expertise in the minimally invasive treatment of AVF in our patient population. For more information on how to refer a patient for evaluation of a brain AVF, please call 914.493.2363.

Cavernous Angioma

Cavernous angioma (also called cavernous malformation) is an irregular bundle of capillary-like blood vessels in the brain. A person can suffer a seizure or other neurological deficit due to this abnormality. Our team has expertise in the minimally invasive treatment of cavernous angioma in our patient population. For more information on how to refer a patient for evaluation of a brain cavernous angioma, please call 914.493.2363.

Intracranial Stenosis

Intracranial stenosis is a condition involving narrowing of a brain artery, which may increase a patient’s risk of stroke. Medical and surgical therapies for treating this condition are available at Westchester Medical Center. Our team has expertise in both medical and minimally invasive treatment for intracranial stenosis in our patient population. For more information on how to refer a patient for evaluation of an intracranial stenosis, please call 914.493.2363.
