Dr. Holmes feels privileged to have the opportunity to help patients through some of their most vulnerable times. She is fascinated by the physiology of the human body, most of all the brain. The brain is our control center and influences the way we move, speak, perceive, and behave. Seizures and epilepsy unfortunately hijack that control, at least temporarily. Dr. Holmes is interested in helping patients gain back control and resume the lifestyle they desire. This involves finding the right medication to keep seizures at bay without side effects, or considering other therapies (such as epilepsy surgery, devices, or dietary therapy) when medications are not enough.
Dr. Holmes is interested in new onset as well as medically refractory epilepsy. It is important to understand the nuances of the diagnosis from the beginning and counsel patients accordingly, with the goal being seizure freedom. In addition to seeing patients, she participates in research and serves on committees in the American Epilepsy Society and American Clinical Neurophysiology Society that are attempting to better understand epilepsy causes, how to improve diagnosis, better predict treatment responses, and potential new therapies. She also has a particular interest in seizures that develop during critical illness (such as stroke and coma) and serves as Westchester Medical Center's representative in the multicenter Critical Care EEG Monitoring Research Consortium.
