What Should I Know About Prostate Health?

Posted By: Advancing Care

Initial symptoms of prostate cancer can be subtle, says J. Keith Festa, MD, Associate Director of Medical Affairs at MidHudson Regional Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, (WMCHealth). “As cancer advances,” he says, “men can experience a decrease in urinary stream, increased urinary frequency, blood in semen, erectile dysfunction, trouble emptying the bladder and bone/pelvic pain.”

About 14 percent of men are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually. Risk factors include advanced age, family history, obesity and ethnicity. Consequently, a healthy diet, rich in fruits and vegetables, as well as regular exercise, are advised.

“Ages for initial testing are changing,” says Dr. Festa. “It’s best to discuss your specific situation with your physician.”
