Dr. Cooney has worked at Westchester Medical Center since 1983. In the earlier years of her career, she worked as a Critical Care Nurse and Nursing Educator. Since 2002, she has worked as a Pain Management Nurse Practitioner. She is also an Instructor in Anesthesiology at New York Medical College and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at Pace University.
Dr Cooney is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner, and is also board certified in Pain Management, Palliative Care, and Critical Care Nursing.
As a compassionate and experienced Nurse Practitioner, she uses skills that focus on the safe and effective relief of pain, which is so critical to patients' outcomes. As a member of the Pain Management team, she brings an attentive ear and a compassionate nursing perspective to the care of patients of all ages throughout the hospital setting. She consults on patients with acute pain from surgery and trauma, as well as those with cancer pain, persistent pain and other pain related conditions. Along with the team, she offers a variety of pharmacological and interventional options to minimize the impact of pain on recovery and quality of life.
As an educator, Dr Cooney is committed to improving the knowledge of other professionals related to pain management. She is on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Pain Management Nursing and is an active member of the American Pain Society, the New York State Nurse Practitioner Association, and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She lectures extensively, and has published on pain related topics in professional journals and texts.
She lives locally and has three adult children. She loves to kayak, cycle, and simply walk by the river.
