Recovery and Discharge
What to Expect During Your Stay
Recovery and discharge practices cover the time immediately following your procedure at Westchester Medical Center up until your exit from the hospital. Recovery times vary from patient to patient, and discharge dates may range from a same-day departure to a week or more after your procedure. Your healthcare team will discuss the specifics of your situation with you both prior to and following your procedure.
Your recovery at Westchester Medical Center is supervised by a healthcare team who will facilitate your recovery and provide essential services. In addition, we maintain simple rules and suggested procedures for all patients and their visitors to help ensure your health and safety.
Your discharge date is determined by your physician who will issue a discharge order and coordinate with your assigned nurse and social worker to manage the final preparations for your return home. You will receive instructions for medications and additional treatment including follow-up appointments, nutrition and meals. Aftercare plans, if needed, will be arranged with the help of your social worker and nursing staff before your discharge.
You should arrange to have a friend or relative pick you up before 10 a.m. on the day of your discharge. Before leaving your room, be sure that you have all your personal belongings. Whenever possible, your transportation should be available to you at the main hospital entrance rather than the hospital parking lots.
Upon discharge, you will be provided with any instructions necessary for your recovery at home. This may include prescriptions you will need, instructions for arranging follow-up appointments, precautions you should follow, and any concerning signs and symptoms which may indicate a need to call your doctor.
